Six.

It took about two seconds after Rose must have gotten the text before she emerged in my room. It was almost on cue that Sidney then called me.

“You got to me kidding me?” He asked before I was even able to say hello. Rose looked like she was going to leave.

“No, Rose.. come in.” I said. She came to sit on the bed with me while I was talking to Sidney.

“Sidney it means nothing.”

“I don’t even know you two very well, a but kiss between you two probably never means nothing.” He said.

“I don’t know what to say about it. It came out of left field. We were watching a movie and I started to cry and then he asked me why we couldn’t have a happy ending? Then he kissed me.” I explained.

“So what now?” He asked.

“I don’t know. It doesn’t change things between me and you.”

“How can it not change things? You are kissing another guy!” He said kind of getting upset.

“Its not like I kissed him.. he kissed me!” I said trying to defend myself.

“Grace.. its Liam. Liam, the boy you talked about on our first date. He may have kissed you but it doesn’t mean that you didn’t want him too.” He said.

“That’s not fair, Sidney.” I said.

“Atleast now I have a reason to dislike him.” Sidney said.

“Sidney, I’m sorry.” I said.

“Its fine. We will just see what happens.” He said.

“I just need to talk to Rose about this all. She always has good insight.” I said.

“Okay, text me tomorrow.” He said.

“Are you sure? Shouldn’t you be concentrating on the game?” I asked.

“Text me, Grace. Please.” He said.

“Okay, I will. It will give me something to look forward to in Anatomy.” I said laughing.

“Atleast I beat Anatomy.” He said.

“Sidney.. I miss you.” I said.

“Yeah, me too. Talk to you tomorrow.” He said.

“Night.” I said.

“Tell Rose I said hi.” He said and then he hung up.

“Sidney says hello.” I said after I hung up the phone.

“So what happened with Liam?” Rose asked.

“Rose, I have no idea. It came out of no where.” I said.

“Tell me everything.”

“well you saw him during the game last night.. wasn’t that weird?” I asked.

“No.” She simply said.

“What?”

“He freaked out because it was the first time you ever cared about another boy besides him. He has always been the one to look elsewhere, but with you.. its always been Liam. Now, it may not be.” She said.

“So, it was the end of the movie and I was crying and I was just like why did they have to make her die? Why couldn’t they have a happy ending?”

“Then he kissed you?” Rose asked.

“He was like, why couldn’t we? Then he kissed me.” I said.

“the question is.. did you want him to kiss you?” She asked me.

“Its weird, Rose. For so many months I have wanted him to kiss me. I have just wanted him to care, but now he decides to care when I have another great guy in my life?” I asked.

“Do you think that’s why he did it?” She asked. I just shrugged my shoulders.

“I think it is. I think he loves you. I mean how couldn’t he after everything you have been through. I think he realizes that he messed up in the beginning of the year.” She said.

“It took him this long to realize that? Its not like it just happened. I mean he brought Morgan to my apartment! He brought her here! He brought her to the house that my parents bought for us!” I said getting upset just thinking about what happened earlier this year.

“It took him this long because he realizes that you aren’t just going to wait for him.” She said.

“Its not fair to Sidney to just be like oh well thanks for getting Liam interested in me again..” I said.

“Its not. Sidney is a good guy from what I know. But, he doesn’t know the most important part of your life.” She said.

“Cancer does not define my life!” I said.

“It doesn’t. I know, it doesn’t. At your core, you are the same Grace I knew in the 3^rd grade, but cancer did change you. I’m just saying, you can’t have a relationship when he doesn’t know everything.”

“I have known him for like 2 months.. not even probably. Should he really know my life story by now?” I asked.

“Grace, you should tell him whenever you feel like it. I’m just saying that Sidney is great, but he doesn’t know about cancer.”

“Maybe I like that.” I said.

“Why?”

“Because when he looks at me, he doesn’t see cancer. He doesn’t see the image of me without hair. He doesn’t see the image of me laying on the bathroom floor throwing up. He doesn’t see these things, because he doesn’t know these things. Liam saw it all. Liam was there when I shaved my head. I mean we shaved our heads together. He was there and saw everything. When Liam sees me, he sees the cancer me.” I said.

“Grace, I get what you are saying.. but you were together long after you left the hospital.” She said.

“I don’t want to let Liam go, but I’m scared to let Sidney go.” I said.

“I just think this kiss tonight was for him to keep you.” She said.

“Yeah.. we will see.” I said.
